Should You Car Coach?
When it comes to parents coaching their young goalie in the car ride home after a game, most probably think it’s a really bad idea.
They might be surprised to hear that Brian Daccord, who has worked in the NHL as a goalie coach, scout and director, and is the father to one goalie in the NHL (Joey Daccord of the Seattle Kraken) and another (Alex Daccord of Saint Anselm College) in the NCAA, believes car coaching is not only good, but necessary.

The first year my daughter played in net (U11) I “car coached” entirely the wrong way. The second year she played I was an assistant and guess who was working with the goalie? After that year of coaching her, I decided I had to walk the walk, so I became a goalie and it 100% changed my view of the game and the position. Nothing less than positivity on the car ride home, yeah you talk about the give aways and the ones you wish you could get back, but you focus on the positives. That daughter is now in her last year of HS and my youngest daughter is in her 2nd year of U13 AA (which I am not coaching) and I’m glad I learned quickly that you cant be too hard on these kids. Its a tough position to begin with, but at the same time, you can’t ignore what needs to be worked on. Its all part of growing and getting better.
