W ith an increasingly deep list of Pro Reads participants that now includes 23 different NHL goalies in the rotation, it can be easy to lose a couple of guys in the rotation, but it’s hard to imagine and even harder to excuse losing track of any video sessions with Jake Allen.
There’s a reason Allen is our most prolific Pro Reads goalie, with eight from his time with the St. Louis Blues and another four from the Montreal Canadiens: He delivers quality that makes us crave quantity. So, after missing out for the better part of this season, here’s another.
THE SCENARIO
Allen is facing a breakaway by Calgary Flames forward Dillon Dube with three minutes left in a game the Canadiens are trailing 1-0, so this is an important save to keep them in the game.
As Dube cuts in with speed from the top of the right faceoff circle (above), and with no backchecking Canadiens players in sight, what do you make of Allen’s depth? What other information are you looking for from Dube that might affect how you would play this?
With Dube getting closer, anything else jump out at you about Allen’s positioning?
Is Dube showing anything that might make you think pass or deke?
THE SAVE
Of course, like most rush plays, speed of the attack matters, so watch the entire sequence now:

- Jake Allen breaks down his breakaway save on Calgary's Dillon Dube with three minutes left in a 1-0 game, keeping Montreal alive.
- Allen read Dube's hand positioning and puck placement as pre-shot tells indicating a glove-side shot, allowing him to position rather than react.
- Allen describes the save as a depth and timing play, not a reaction save — the puck hit him because he was already in the right position.
