“Vizual Edge has added a quality element to my preparation as a goaltender. I use the game day drills every game before heading to the rink. It’s a combination of recognition, reaction and focus that activates my brain and eyes to feel ready for what’s to come.” — Jordan Binnington

With a new season around the corner, we want to empty the vault on past Pro Reads and that includes making sure we don’t waste any video breakdowns from Joey Daccord, who is exceptional when it comes to reading plays and anticipating what come next.
This footage may date back to his time with the Ottawa Senators but the Seattle Kraken stopper is a fan favorite from his first six Pro Reads, so we don’t want to miss any of his insights.
THE SCENARIO
This time Daccord is facing a rush chance against two of the top offensive players in the NHL today, Austen Matthews and Mitch Marner of the Toronto Maple Leafs:
As Marner cuts across the slot and pushes the puck out on his forehand, what would you be expecting in terms of shot location? What do you make of Daccord’s depth decision here?
Is there any information in that freeze frame that might lend itself to being aggressive?
THE SAVE
Because this is a rush chance, speed matters, so watch the entire sequence and ask yourself the same questions from above.
Did anything change in terms of your expectations? Were there any clues that hinted at what was to come in terms of Marner shooting back against the grain?
THE PRO READ
Now let’s get Daccord’s thoughts on Marner’s shot, and why he anticipated its direction:

- Daccord breaks down his save against Austen Matthews and Mitch Marner on a rush chance, anticipating Marner's shot direction before release.
- Daccord explains that when forwards push the puck laterally, shooting it back against the grain is almost always the result — not continuing in the same direction.
- Daccord reveals that staying dead center on the puck in this situation would have left him vulnerable to the against-the-grain shot, so he pre-adjusted his positioning to take it away.
