“Vizual Edge has added a quality element to my preparation as a goaltender. I use the game day drills every game before heading to the rink. It’s a combination of recognition, reaction and focus that activates my brain and eyes to feel ready for what’s to come.” — Jordan Binnington

Joseph Woll made his Pro Reads return in late February and was so good again in this format that we went back-to-back with the young Toronto Maple Leafs goalie.
Woll, whose +1.9 adjusted save percentage that still ranks 3rd in the NHL despite an injury interrupted season, did five of these video breakdowns with InGoal after being a guest on Episode 158 of the InGoal Radio Podcast almost exactly two years ago. Two years is a long time in the development of a young pro, so it’s interesting to note the changes — and what hasn’t changed – from our recent video review of games early this season.
We’re going to go back-to-back with Woll again this week, with a longer bonus breakdown in the coming days, but first a quick hit with tips on managing desperation:
THE SCENARIO
This starts as a rush chance that ends up behind the net before a pass into the high slot:
Who is the most dangerous player in that freeze frame above?
Are you thinking pass or shot as this puck comes out to Phil Danault atop the circle?
Are there and clues you can spot right away?
What do you think of Woll’s depth here?
THE SAVE
Ask yourself the same questions as you watch it play out in real time below:
Did you anticipate correctly? Do you think Woll did?
What stands out the most about his movement to the left?
THE PRO READ

- Joseph Woll breaks down his save on a rush-turned-high-slot play against Phil Danault, where a screen prevented him from tracking the pass.
- When traffic takes away a goalie's eyes, the save can shift from a read to pure instinct — Woll confirms he never saw the pass and reacted entirely off his read of the backdoor player.
- Managing desperation saves requires recognizing the backdoor threat early, because by the time the puck moves through traffic, there may be no time to process the pass itself.
