Dustin Wolf signed a two-year contract extension as a restricted free agent with the Calgary Flames on Tuesday, and with Jacob Markstrom traded earlier this summer, appears set to be a full-time NHL goalie next season.

Wolf played 17 games with the Flames last year while also completing a third straight season in the American Hockey League, where he is a two-time Goalie of the Year and won the league MVP award as well. He has been equally good in this space over that time, so with the contract news we figured now was a good time to go back to Wolf for one last breakdown from our video session last summer.

THE SEQUENCE

Wolf’s first four Pro Reads came from his NHL debut against the San Jose Sharks, a team and players he grew up watching and cheering for in northern California, but this time we dipped into preseason footage for a complete shootout session.

Rather than a detailed breakdown, we’ll show you freeze frames from two of the three Winnipeg Jets shooters that Wolf stared down this time:

What do you make of Wolf’s depth at this point of the sequence? We know it may be hard to gauge without first seeing the speed (of both the shooter and Wolf) but what benefits do you think might come with this type of aggression?

Different shooter and replay angle, but what do you make of Wolf’s positioning in the second freeze frame? Can you see any obviously problems or exposure with it? Can you think of a reason he might be creating that on purpose?

THE SAVE

Of course, speed and angle of attack matter on shootouts, so watch the full save sequence and below to see if you can answer the same questions in real time?

THE PRO READ

Let’s hear Wolf on his approach to shootouts in general and these in particular.

Key Takeaways
  • Dustin Wolf breaks down his shootout saves against Winnipeg Jets shooters from a preseason session, using freeze frames and full replay to explain his positioning and depth choices.
  • Wolf's core shootout principle: match the shooter's speed, whether facing a penalty shot-style breakaway from the red line or a formal shootout attempt.
  • Wolf uses aggressive depth to create pressure on shooters, a deliberate positional choice rather than an error in his positioning or coverage.
