Tips on When to Use Reverse Through Traffic
The #1 goalie vision & cognitive training tool trusted by over 50 NHL & AHL goalies.
“Vizual Edge has added a quality element to my preparation as a goaltender. I use the game day drills every game before heading to the rink. It’s a combination of recognition, reaction and focus that activates my brain and eyes to feel ready for what’s to come.” — Jordan Binnington

Matt Murray re-signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs after battling back from hip surgery that kept him out almost all last season, and while the veteran two-time Stanley Cup winner seems destined to start this comeback in the AHL, it would be foolish to bet against him playing in the NHL again. Anyone who listened to Murray past Pro Reads videos might hedge towards it being sooner rather than later too because they’ve gotten a glimpse into how well he sees and processes the game, and how much that will help once his body functions properly again. We’re hoping so here at InGoal too because it will mean a chance to do more of these videos with Murray, whose breakdowns have been exceptional.
Murray has been exceptional in this format after that extended sit-down last summer, starting with a master class on managing screens in his debut before moving onto deflections, net play, post integration and managing a multiple-stance system.
This is the last video from that can’t-miss video session, which included Murray explaining why reading and processing the game has been a big part of his success to date.
“I see my game as one where my athleticism is not necessarily my strongest suit, so these reads are kind of the equalizer for a guy like me,” Murray said. “I’ve for the size and I’ve got the brain for it — I read the play well — but there are a lot of guys in the League that are a lot more athletic than I am and it’s a good lesson for young goalies that there are other equalizers, you don’t always have to be just the best athlete. Being good with these types of reads and little technical details can really help your game.”
THE SEQUENCE
This time Murray is facing an in-zone cycle sequence against the Boston Bruins:
There’s some earlier movement leading up to the freeze frame above that Murray discusses in terms of stance management and less than a second before, he was squared up in what he labeled a mid-stance, so what do you make of Murray’s choice to go into a Reverse here? Do you think it’s about the shooting threat or the passing option?
THE SAVE
Now watch it play out in real time and ask yourself the same questions:
What factors do you think went into Murray choosing a Reverse here? Would you have done the same, or played it different? Did you notice anything about his movement or stances leading up to that point in the sequence? What about the push across?
THE PRO READ
Now, let’s hear Murray break it down and explain his decision to use Reverse:
