"Vizual Edge has added a quality element to my preparation as a goaltender. I use the game day drills every game before heading to the rink. It’s a combination of recognition, reaction and focus that activates my brain and eyes to feel ready for what’s to come.” — Jordan Binnington

Joseph Woll is back from an early season injury and back in form with five straight wins and a .923 save percentage for the season that ranks sixth in the NHL, ever so slightly behind playing partner Anthony Stolarz (.924). Woll is also a user of Vizual Edge, an advanced online visual training system that is now presenting sponsor of our Pro Reads segment, so it’s no wonder he sees the game so well and has become a favourite with these video breakdowns.

THE SCENARIO

Woll is facing a 2-on-1 down low against the Ottawa Senators after a turnover inside the blue line, with Tim Stutzle on his forehand and Vladimir Tarasenko as a cross-ice pass option:

Woll Pro Reads 14 Screencap 1
What do you make of Woll’s decision to use a reverse-VH at this point?
What factors do you think matter most when making that decision?
Would you make the same choice or try something else?
What? Why?

THE SAVE

Ask yourself the same questions as you watch this play out in real time:

As good as that save was, do you see a path to making it less desperate?
Can you see any delay — and reasons for it — in Woll’s move across?
Again, what factors might go into making a different choice?
Is it where Stutzle is on the ice? Is it handedness?

THE PRO READ

Now let’s check in with Woll to get his answers to all those questions. You might be surprised to hear he too would prefer to have handled it differently.
