THE SEQUENCE

What starts as a rush against the Calgary Flames turns into more of an in-zone flash screen after Michael Backlund pulls up on the boards. Talbot gets into both parts of the play because they play a factor, but we’ll focus on the screen for now:

First some context that will become evident in the video below: the Flames and Red Wings players in front of Talbot are moving to his right as Calgary forward (No. 27) Matt Coronato skates in unchecked and loads up from the top of the left circle.

Given all that, what do you notice about Talbot’s positioning and sight line?

What factors do you think matter the most in terms of whether he should hold his vision on the short side of that screen or shift to the middle?

Is there a point you are shifting across to the other side of that screen? Why?

THE SAVE

Watch the play and ask yourself the same questions before we hear from Talbot.

Beyond the obvious — and primary — need to see the puck and Coronato’s release, what factors do you think went into the decision to shift across that screen, and the timing of it? Did you notice anything about the initial rush and push that helped?

Key Takeaways
  • Talbot breaks down his save on a flash screen against Matt Coronato (No. 27) of the Calgary Flames, where a rush transition created a late screening situation at the top of the left circle.
  • Talbot consciously surrendered ice as Michael Backlund stopped being a shooting threat off the rush, using a glide to reposition before the screen developed.
  • Deciding when to shift vision across a moving screen — and the timing of that shift — was the central challenge Talbot identifies in this play.
