Joey Daccord was voted the Seattle Kraken MVP for this season by the Seattle media that and even though that season ended earlier than Daccord and the Kraken would like this week, it gives us an excuse to go back to him for another Pro Reads entry.

Not that we needed any reason beyond the fact Daccord is so good in this format, first sharing his play-reading insights while with the Ottawa Senators in 2021 before re-joining us for an in-person video session just before training camp this season.

THE SEQUENCE

This time Daccord is dealing with a 5-on-5 point shot with an open tip option in the high slot and a secondary passing option down low to his right against the Columbus Blue Jackets:

Looking at the scenario above, what are the primary threats, and what makes them unique?

What do you notice about Daccord’s positioning at this point?

Since we’ve already pretty much given away what’s about to happen with the headline of this Pro Reads, ask yourself these two questions about the high tip option:

1. How are you coming across on a shot pass to the high tip?

Slide? Shuffle? T-Push?

2. What is your positional target for that push?

THE SAVE

Now watch the play, especially the last replay, with those two questions in mind:

Did anything jump out about how Daccord came across? Why do you think that might be important? Perhaps more interestingly, what appears to be his target for that movement?

THE PRO READ

Now let’s hear from Daccord on how he saw this play unfold and he managed it:
