Devon Levi is coming off a 35-save shutout for Rochester in the American Hockey League playoffs, improving his admittedly small sample two-game post-season save percentage to .968, so now felt like a good time to go back to the Buffalo Sabres puck-stopping prospect.
Not that we should need an excuse given how good Levi is in this format. We certainly don’t want to waste any of his great insights from our extended sit down two summers ago, and this is the final Pro Reads breakdown from that video session in Montreal.
THE SEQUENCE
In this video review, Levi is facing the Columbus Blue Jackets and a rush-style chance that originates off a Sabres turnover just inside the Buffalo blue line:
Looking at that freeze frame above, what factors stand out as potentially having the biggest impact on this play? Is it the puck carrier, the player to his left, or the one driving to the net (No. 93, Jakub Voracek)? What do you make of Levi’s depth at this point?
With the puck in the high slot, in what way is Voracek most dangerous going to the net?
Make a list of 4 different ways Voracek can affect this play?
THE SAVE
This is a bit of a hard play to isolate with additional freeze frames, so let’s go to the video and as you watch this play out, ask yourself the same questions as above.
Was the final scoring chance for Voracek one you had listed before watching the video?
What did you notice about how Levi handled this situation once he was in the frame?

- Devon Levi breaks down his save on a rush-style chance off a Sabres turnover, with Jakub Voracek (No. 93) driving hard to the net as the primary threat.
- Levi explains that staying at proper depth before a turnover happens gives him 'flow' on the play, avoiding a scramble recovery — a habit he says he had to develop over time.
- Recognizing that in-zone turnovers are attacked immediately in the NHL, Levi emphasizes pre-positioning as the key to handling net-front threats without losing position.
