Seattle Kraken Prospect Skating Warm Up Stresses Edges and Balance

Seattle Kraken Prospect Skating Warm Up Stresses Edges + Balance

Key Takeaways
  • Structure every goalie skating warm-up around four movement patterns: feet-to-feet, feet-to-knees, knees-to-feet, and knees-to-knees.
  • Keep the upper body quiet during edge work — Zulianello highlights Östman's still upper body as the key indicator of efficient, precise goalie movement.
  • Give goalies a voice in their warm-up routine within a defined framework, so they feel ownership while still hitting all required movement targets.
  • Tall goalies can develop elite edge work — at 6-foot-4, Östman demonstrates that size is not a barrier to precise skating mechanics.
  • Build a personalized warm-up by understanding the purpose of each movement type, then selecting variations that address your individual needs as a goalie.

Victor Östman shared this quick and seemingly simple skating warm-up that incorporates all the key elements of goalie movement while working on balance and edge control.

It’s part of his warm-up routine as a first-year pro with the Coachella Valley Firebirds in the American Hockey League.

“Vic has got great edge work: notice during these movements, his upper body is relatively still, very still actually,” said Seattle Kraken goalie development and AHL goalie coach Colin Zulianello. “There’s no wasted energy in the movement. He’s very precise with it. He’s 6-foot-4 and his edge work is very good.”

For some, watching that may be enough, but for those who want to truly understand the HOW and WHY, we talked to Östman and Zulianello about each movement. They explain how they combine the various parts while breaking down six separate videos for our subscribers below, and lay it all out in way that will help YOU develop a warm-up specific to YOUR needs as a goalie.
