Rebound Simulation for Hands with Seattle Kraken Goalie Coach
- Use a two-shooter rebound drill starting with a push off the post: the first shot targets the far pad to produce a rebound, and the second shooter fires immediately to train eyes onto the new puck.
- Coach Zulianello designs the drill to simulate scenarios where the rebound 'is supposed to go in,' forcing goalies to be explosive and reactive rather than passive.
- The primary purpose is hand activation — getting the goalie's hands moving quickly before practice rather than perfecting technically precise movement.
- Scripting the puck location in drills is acknowledged as a limitation, but Zulianello values the fast-paced, pressure-heavy environment it creates for skill development.
- Goalie Ales Stezka specifically requested this drill as part of his personal pre-practice warm-up routine, highlighting the value of goalie-driven drill customization.
It’s almost hard to believe how many different drills and teaching tips InGoal Magazine got from watching just one practice with new Seattle Kraken goalie coach Colin Zulianello during a playoff visit with the Coachella Valley Firebirds late last season.
And we’re not done yet, in large part because one of the goalies that day, Alez Stezka, who has since signed back in his native Czechia for the upcoming season, wasn’t done either.
After completing the other warm-ups and drills already featured (links below), Stezka wanted Zulianello to run one more drill for him before practice started.
“Stez likes to do this drill. It’s simple, essentially a rebound simulation drill,” Zulianello said after while reviewing the video. “He likes that it gets his hands going, and he’s playing this real aggressive, he’s really pushing, and he’s maybe got a little bit more movement than he would normally have, but he is just doing it to get his hands going.”
It starts with a push off the post to the initial shooter, who shoots low along the ice to the far pad, and then the goalie recovers across to a second shooter, who is firing right away:
