Jet Greaves earned his spot as a full-time NHLer with an exceptional finish to last season, and is back with the Columbus Blue Jackets this year, which gave us the opportunity to catch up with the insightful 24-year-old during a recent visit to Vancouver for a quick video session.
Greaves became a Pro Reads favourite after breaking down a memorable NHL debut against his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs two summers ago and doesn’t disappoint this time.
THE SEQUENCE
This is an extended power play earlier this season against the Washington Capitals, and the puck has just been chipped up from the corner to Alexander Ovechkin on the left boards:
What information are you looking for in the freeze frame above?
Does it matter that Ovechkin is on his forehand? Is he a shooting threat?
What are the most dangerous threats on the ice? Does their handedness matter?
If Ovechkin makes that cross-ice pass, are you coming across on your feet or sliding?
Lastly, what do you notice about Greaves above — his depth, angle and gaze?
THE SAVE
Ask yourself the same questions as you watch the replay now?
If you watched the attacking players and the puck the first time, watch the replay above again but this time pay close attention to Greaves from start to finish.
In that 15 second replay, how many times does he look off the puck to scan the zone?
What do you make of the decision to come across on the feet?
Given how open the shooter was, would you have challenged more?

- Greaves breaks down his save on a Washington Capitals power play, tracking the puck from the corner to Ovechkin on the left boards and managing multiple dangerous threats simultaneously.
- Greaves scans the zone multiple times during the 15-second sequence, looking off the puck repeatedly to account for all attacking players before committing to his movement.
- Greaves chose to come across on his feet rather than sliding when Ovechkin made the cross-ice pass, a decision he explains in the context of the shooter's positioning and his own depth and angle at the time.
