It’s been more than three years since Frederik Andersen last appeared in Pro Reads, but the Carolina Hurricanes veteran is no stranger to the format. Andersen was one of the first NHL goalies to sit down with InGoal Magazine for these video reviews way back when he played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and has done 14 such breakdowns since — six in person with Toronto and another eight over Zoom in Carolina. Soft spoken but insightful, Andersen was an immediate favorite in the format, so we’re excited to add to that in-person total.
THE SEQUENCE
This breakdown features a 2-on-1 rush chance against the New York Rangers:
As J.T. Miller carries this into the zone in the freeze frame with Vincent Trochek on his right, what are the key pieces of information you need to be aware of as the goalie?
Any thoughts on Andersen’s depth at this point?
Now that the pass has been made, what stands out to you as a goalie? As you look at Andersen tracking this puck across, are you thinking he’ll skate or slide across? What would you prefer?
The Save
Of course, speed matters on a rush chance, so watch the entire sequence and replays in real time to see if it played out as you expected, and ask yourself the same questions:
Were you at all surprised to see Andersen slide across? Can you identify why? What did you make of him grabbing that lead edge to stop, and ending up in something of an old-school VH well outside his post? Again, can you think of why? Does it remind you of any other goalies?
