Why Devin Cooley’s Viral “Nothing Matters” Mindset Actually Works for Goalies
- Devin Cooley's 'nothing matters' philosophy is not about apathy but about emotional neutrality and staying present between shots.
- Outcome-based thinking is one of the leading causes of mental breakdown for goaltenders after allowing goals.
- Adopting a process-focused mindset helps goalies reset faster and maintain consistent performance across a game.
- Cooley's viral approach aligns with established sports psychology techniques used by elite athletes to manage pressure.
- Goalies at any level can apply this mindset by practicing deliberate emotional detachment from both mistakes and big saves.
“Nothing matters. Nobody cares. We’re all going to die.”
Devin Cooley has gone viral more than once by offering up this piece of inspirational fatalism in post-game interviews. Whether it was the first time while with the San Jose Sharks two seasons ago, or several times since joining the Calgary Flames organization, every time Cooley repeats the phrase, it makes the rounds in non-goalie media as another wacky goalie story.
It’s Arturs Irbe breaking in his gear by running it over with a car. Patrick Roy talking to his posts. Devon Levi’s Qui-Gon Jinn routine. Braden Holtby watching water droplets. It’s created so much buzz that Cooley started selling sweatshirts with the phrase to raise money for charity.
“Those crazy goalies,” they all say, shaking their heads with a knowing smile.
But I would argue what Cooley is saying is not crazy. We laugh because it’s shocking. But when the shock wears off, we also laugh because it’s uncomfortably close to the truth.
