Dustin Wolf is one of the best young goalies in the game and an informative delight in these video breakdowns, so after sharing this space with others for more than a month, it’s time to get back to the Calgary Flames star for another Pro Reads.

THE SEQUENCE

This time we’re looking at a rush chance against the Seattle Kraken that doesn’t seem like much at the blue line but quickly becomes dangerous:

Freeze frame from Dustin Wolf Pro Reads 14 showing the rush developing against the Seattle Kraken

Wolf isn’t even in the picture yet and the reality of the replays available on this chance makes it harder to capture his positioning without giving away what happens after the freeze frame above. But that doesn’t mean you can’t already try to figure it out based on the information above. Do you think this will be a pass or is the shooter a threat from here? What information about the potential recipient matters most?

Freeze frame from Dustin Wolf Pro Reads 14 showing Wolf's positioning relative to Eeli Tolvanen

Switching angles to take a look at the camera behind the net, we get a very different view of how this plays out, with the pass coming across to talented shooter Eeli Tolvanen and a significant angle change. What do you make of Wolf’s positioning at this point? Is he ahead or behind Tolvanen at this point? What does that mean if Tolvanen shoots short side? What does it mean if he goes against the grain?

THE SAVE

Now watch the save in real time and get a better feel for the pace of this rush:

Ask yourself the same questions after watching the video and replay? Was Wolf behind Tolvanen? Did he get lucky in that regard that the shot was back against the grain? Was he still in position to make a save if Tolvanen went short side?

What did you make of Wolf’s initial route across on the pass?

What do you think are the keys to Wolf making this save?
