We went five years — and three NHL teams — between video breakdown sessions with Alex Nedeljkovic, which borders on criminal on our end given how insightful the current San Jose Sharks goalie has been throughout his career. Nedeljkovic reminded us of how good he is in this format by delivering a five-minute masterclass on managing plays behind the net in his return and picks up on that theme with a look at his technical keys managing a similar play this week.

THE SEQUENCE

This time Nedeljkovic has just been forced to switch sides on a loose puck behind the net, and is now looking over his right shoulder as the Florida Panthers forward cuts in tight by his post:

Freeze frame: Alex Nedeljkovic on his right post as Florida Panthers forward Sam Reinhart cuts in behind the net

Looking at the freeze frame above, what do you think is the most likely “next” play for Panthers forward Sam Reinhart cutting behind the net to that puck? Is he likely to stay on Nedeljkovic’s right side, or cut across the net to his left? Is a wraparound the most dangerous threat?

Or is it something else? What do you see as the keys to managing this chance?

THE SAVE

Watch the save and replay below with those same questions in mind, and, like last time, beyond identifying the threats, pay attention to how Nedeljkovic moves:

Did anything stand out about Nedeljkovic’s play beyond how he managed the play behind the net? Was there anything you’d do different? It’s OK to say so, because there was an element of this that Nedeljkovic himself would have liked to manage a bit differently.
