Dustin Wolf is one of the best young goalies in the game and an informative delight in these video breakdowns, so InGoal is going back to the Calgary Flames star for another Pro Reads from last season’s video session. After four straight from Wolf dealing with plays behind the net, this time we’ve got one from off the boards.

THE SEQUENCE

This time we’re looking at a rush chance against the Vegas Golden Knights and skilled forward Mitch Marner on his backhand along the half wall to Wolf’s left:

Mitch Marner carries the puck on his backhand along the half wall as Dustin Wolf reads the rush, with Brett Howden in front and Brandon Saad heading backdoor

Looking at the freeze frame above, who are the primary threats? Is Marner a shooting threat from there on his backhand? Is Brett Howden dangerous as a screen or tip option? What about Brandon Saad cutting to the backdoor? Is he a realistic threat given the position Marner is in? Lastly, what side of the Howden screen would you be looking around given all the other information?

THE SAVE

Now watch the save and ask yourself the same questions:

Did it play out how you expected? What did you think of Wolf’s chosen sightline given the backdoor threat? Lastly, did you identify any keys to the way Wolf came across that gave him a chance to make a difficult cross-ice save?

Once that pass gets past Wolf’s stick, what allows him to make the save?
