The idea of seeing Henrik Lundqvist in anything but a New York Rangers jersey and his signature matching equipment is hard for goalies to wrap their heads around, but there is one constant we can continue counting on: the way Lundqvist wraps his hand around his stick.
The squared-off inside shoulder has long been a staple for Lundqvist, and there’s no reason to think it won’t continue with the Washington Capitals, especially after he switched to a Bauer Vapor 2X Pro composite stick with his unique handle. As for why and how he uses the grip, Lundqvist walked InGoal through it quickly outside the Rangers stick room after practice:

In order to make the grip, is he adding material to the stick? Or cutting away existing material?
It looks like cutting away the existing paddle to make the shape
Murray does a great job showing us Lundqvist style grip about 1:30 in… but any chance you guys could get either some video or stills of the notched paddle he demonstrates with first?

My guess would be some sort of sander / dremel tool rather than a blade. Of course, a jigsaw would probably do the trick…
Can we see someone use a non-modified stick? I’ve played my whole life with that “handshake, index finger down” grip and I don’t really see the advantage those paddle cuts make?
I would like to try one of these new grip cutouts for my Bantam goalie. What about the ability to poke check? Seems like the Lundqvist grip would be better for a younger goalie to be able to still poke check.
