"Vizual Edge has added a quality element to my preparation as a goaltender. I use the game day drills every game before heading to the rink. It’s a combination of recognition, reaction and focus that activates my brain and eyes to feel ready for what’s to come.” — Jordan Binnington

Joseph Woll is back in the starter role, winning three straight games for the Toronto Maple Leafs while Anthony Stolarz continues to recover from knee surgery, and now he’s back with another Pro Reads session. Woll is also a user of Vizual Edge, an online visual training system that is now presenting sponsor of our Pro Reads segment, so it’s no wonder he sees the game so well and has become a fan favourite with these video breakdowns.

THE SCENARIO

Woll could only chuckle as we cued up this replay because he knew what was coming, a second-straight breakdown of a ridiculous backdoor save off Vladimir Tarasenko, this time off an in-zone play that became more of a rush-style scoring chance.

THE SAVE

Since we already told you how this sequence ends, we’ll skip the freeze frame breakdowns and go straight to the video. As you watch this play, try to identify the threats and as how you’d do things differently. It’s okay to be critical because Woll was.

As good as that save was, do you see a path to making it less desperate?
Can you see why Woll ends up in this position?
Watch it again, but this time look for the reasons he is able to make the saves despite that.

Would Woll have aimed for the post initially, right when the backdoor threat caught the pass?

There’s a few schools of thought there I’ve heard. 1. It’s a race to the post, as you suggest. 2. Desperation – get something in the middle of the net as fast as you can.
