Born in Bern, Switzerland on May 12, 2000, Akira Schmid became the 136th overall selection when the New Jersey Devils chose him in the fifth round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. Standing 6'5" and catching left, he is one of a small number of Swiss-born goaltenders to reach the NHL.
Schmid's path to regular NHL duty was gradual. He made his first appearances with New Jersey in the 2021-22 season, going 0-4 in six games with a 4.83 goals-against average and a .833 save percentage. The following season brought a different story. In 2022-23, Schmid appeared in 18 games for the Devils, posting a 9-5-0 record, a 2.13 goals-against average, a .922 save percentage, and one shutout — figures that stood as the high-water marks of his Devils tenure. He remained in New Jersey's rotation for 2023-24, starting 19 games and going 5-9-0, with a 3.15 goals-against average and a .895 save percentage.
Before the 2024-25 season, Schmid moved to the Vegas Golden Knights. In five appearances that year, he went 2-0-0 with a 1.26 goals-against average and a .944 save percentage, his best single-season numbers at the NHL level to that point.
Now wearing number 40 for Vegas, Schmid has carried a full workload in 2025-26.
