Colten Ellis grew up in River Denys, Nova Scotia, a small community on Cape Breton Island, and made his first mark on the hockey world well before any professional league came calling. Playing for the Cape Breton West Islanders at the minor hockey level, Ellis was part of the team that brought Nova Scotia its first-ever Telus Cup championship in 2017. That run brought him to wider attention in Atlantic Canada and set the stage for a major junior career in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
Ellis played in the QMJHL with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, the Rimouski Océanic, and the Charlottetown Islanders. In his first QMJHL season he was named defensive rookie of the year and earned a spot on the all-rookie team. His final season in the league produced results that stood against the best in QMJHL history: he tied the league's career shutout record, broke the single-season goals-against average record, and posted the fourth-best season save percentage in league history. He was named the QMJHL's top goaltender that season and earned a first all-star team selection.
That body of work drew NHL interest, and in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft the St. Louis Blues selected Ellis 93rd overall in the third round. He signed an entry-level contract with the Blues in 2021 and began his professional development in the ECHL with the Worcester Railers before moving up to the AHL's Springfield Thunderbirds. A mid-season injury cut short his 2022–23 campaign with the ECHL's Tulsa Oilers. In the seasons that followed, Ellis rebuilt his game, steadily improved his numbers, and worked his way into the starting role with the Thunderbirds.
In October 2025, the Blues placed Ellis on waivers and he was claimed by the Buffalo Sabres, beginning a new chapter at the NHL level. Through 16 games in the 2025–26 season, Ellis carries a record of 8–4–2, a 2.90 goals-against average, a .903 save percentage, and one shutout, with a total of 911:20 of time on ice.
Ellis wears number 92 for Buffalo and is 25 years old.
