David Aebischer
David Aebischer was born on February 7, 1978, in Fribourg, Switzerland — a detail that would become historically significant when the Colorado Avalanche selected him in the sixth round of the 1997 NHL Draft, 27th pick of that round, and eventually brought him to the NHL. When the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in 2001, Aebischer became the first Swiss-born player to win the championship.
A left-catching goaltender standing 6'1" and weighing 187 pounds, Aebischer went on to appear in 214 NHL regular season games, posting 106 wins, 74 losses, and 5 overtime losses, with a goals-against average of 2.52, a save percentage of .912, and 13 shutouts. His NHL career included stops with Colorado, the Montreal Canadiens, and the Phoenix Coyotes before he returned to Switzerland, where he played for HC Fribourg-Gottéron, HC Lugano, and the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers in the National League.
