Dieter Kochan, born May 11, 1974, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, became the first player called up directly from the United Hockey League to the NHL β€” a distinction that marked an unusual path through professional hockey's lower tiers before he reached the top level.

Selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the fourth round of the 1993 NHL Draft, 20th pick of that round, the left-catching goaltender stood 6'1" and weighed 165 pounds. His route to the NHL stretched across nearly a decade and included a notable moment on January 5, 1999, when he scored a goal while playing for the B.C. Icemen.

Kochan appeared in 21 NHL games across stints with the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Minnesota Wild between 2000 and 2003, posting a record of 1 win and 11 losses with a goals-against average of 3.96 and a save percentage of .862. He recorded no shutouts in that span.

Away from the NHL, Kochan represented the United States at the 2002 IIHF World Championship and was a member of the Houston Aeros team that won the Calder Cup in the 2002–03 season.
