Hannah Murphy grew up in Kingston, Ontario, watching Carey Price on television and dreaming of playing like him — calm, technical, and unhurried. By the time she arrived in the PWHL as a 2025 draft pick of the Seattle Torrent, she had a framework for describing her own game that traces a clear line back to that early influence. "I would say I'm a pretty calm technical goaltender," she said on [1]. "I definitely play a more positional game, but I do think that at times, I would throw that out the window just to make a save."
Murphy graduated from Colgate University in the spring of 2025, where she served as captain in her final season and posted a .937 save percentage with a 73-16-1 record over her college career. She held program records for shutouts, goals-against average, and save percentage at the time of her graduation. She shared the net at Colgate with Kaley Osborne, who has also appeared on InGoal's podcast, and Murphy credited that daily competition as a significant factor in her own development. "I was lucky to play as much as I did," she said on [1]. "I love learning from Kaley at Colgate, being able to see her on the ice every day and do our goalie sessions together really helped me to grow as a goaltender."
Colgate head coach Greg Fargo — himself a former goaltender, now behind the bench in New York — emphasized puck handling within the program's systems, and Murphy described the repetition as foundational to her game at the professional level. Her final year as captain also gave her an unusual vantage point: playing a position that takes a goaltender off the bench and away from teammates between whistles. She described media timeouts as one of the tools that kept her connected to the group, and credited her ability to slow down play as a way of steadying a younger roster that had lost several experienced players to graduation.
The transition from Colgate to Seattle brought Murphy across the continent to a new city, a new team, and the largest crowds she had played in front of. Her first start with the Torrent coincided with the franchise's first home win, in front of 8,600 fans. "Hearing the roar of the crowd was seriously amazing," she said on [1]. She also described a 2-1 win over Montreal as a different kind of milestone — facing Canadian national team players Mélodie Daoust and Marie-Philip Poulin for the first time, while also playing against Ann-Renée Desbiens, a goaltender she identified as her current favorite to watch. "Her style of game, I would say, is pretty similar to Carey Price," she said on [1]. "And if you ask me currently who's my favorite goalie to watch, it would have to be her."
Murphy described the biggest adjustment at the professional level as net-front play — specifically the ability of PWHL players to elevate on rebounds, change angles, and tip pucks in ways that differ from the college game. She said ice scanning, a habit she developed at Colgate, helped her manage the speed of the professional game. "It feels a lot slower when you already know where players are moving and what's gonna happen," she said on [1].
Her preparation includes a pregame framework of three technical focal points — elements of stance, eye lead, or positioning — that she said keep her grounded without overcomplicating her in-game thinking. She also uses regular post touches during play as a physical reset to confirm her squareness in the net. On the equipment side, she described sending her gloves out annually to Goaliemod for break-in and floating-tee modifications, calling it one of the few gear customizations she has come to rely on consistently.
The Torrent's goaltending staff in Seattle is led by coach Sheldon, whom Murphy said she had worked with previously on the national development team. Her two teammates in the crease, CJ and Schroeds, play with different physical profiles, and Murphy described observing the differences in their positioning and post play as another ongoing source of learning.
Murphy's older sister was a goaltender, and she identified that as the origin of her own position choice. She played multiple sports through high school — basketball and volleyball among them — and said she did not commit exclusively to hockey until later in her development. She grew up skating in the Greater Toronto Area, where she had access to goaltending coaches throughout minor hockey, before working with Chris Cobb at Top Prospect Goaltending during her time at Colgate.
