Born in Syracuse, New York on March 26, 1984, Howard was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round, 34th overall, in the 2003 NHL Draft. He went on to appear in 543 regular-season games — all in a Red Wings uniform — finishing his playing career with 246 wins, 196 losses, 70 overtime losses, a 2.62 goals-against average, a .912 save percentage, and 24 shutouts.
Since retiring as a player, Howard has remained connected to the franchise as a studio analyst for Bally Sports Detroit.
