Kelly Hrudey was born on January 13, 1961, in Edmonton, Alberta, and went on to spend fifteen seasons as an NHL goaltender before becoming a familiar face in Canadian hockey broadcasting. Selected by the New York Islanders in the second round, 17th pick overall, of the 1980 NHL Draft, the left-catching Hrudey stood 5'10" and weighed 190 pounds.
Over 677 career NHL games split among the New York Islanders, Los Angeles Kings, and San Jose Sharks, Hrudey posted 271 wins, 265 losses, a 3.43 goals-against average, a .893 save percentage, and 17 shutouts. His playing career ran from 1983 to 1998. Since retiring, he has worked as a broadcaster with Sportsnet, serving as a studio analyst on Hockey Night in Canada and as a colour commentator for Calgary Flames regional broadcasts.
