Logan Thompson
2025-26 Season
Logan Thompson was not drafted after four seasons with the WHL's Brandon Wheat Kings. That fact shaped everything that came after.
Without an NHL organization behind him, Thompson signed a professional tryout contract with Washington in his age-20 year, but recognized that the team had six goalies on its depth chart and was not going to provide the opportunity he was looking for. A stint in the ECHL followed without traction. The turning point came at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, where head coach Marty Williamson offered him games and, crucially, an understanding that Thompson's professional ambitions hadn't disappeared. "Brock was really good," Thompson said on Episode 115 of the InGoal Radio Podcast InGoal Radio Episode 115 with Logan Thompson. "They were like, 'We're here if you want,' but they understood I wanted to go pro. They had my back and they gave me a place to play and a home." In 2018-19, his one season at Brock, Thompson went 18-6-0 with a .934 save percentage and won both rookie of the year and goalie of the year honors Pro Tips with Logan Thompson Focusing on Control, not Numbers Turned Career Around.
The ECHL came calling after that single university season. Thompson joined the South Carolina Stingrays and posted a 23-8-1 record with a .929 save percentage Pro Tips with Logan Thompson Focusing on Control, not Numbers Turned Career Around. Vegas signed him to an entry-level deal in 2020-21, and he made his NHL debut that same year in relief of Marc-AndrΓ© Fleury. "Signing my contract was like a dream come true. And then getting called up was obviously another exciting moment," he said Pro Tips with Logan Thompson Focusing on Control, not Numbers Turned Career Around.
Thompson has spoken at length about what he learned watching Fleury and Robin Lehner up close in Vegas. "You can learn from watching Flower to be athletic, but then Lehner also plays the percentage game really well, and that's kind of something that I wanted to get more in my game β I can make those big saves, but there's times when I can just relax and play the percentage and just let it hit me as opposed to trying to do too much," he said Pro Tips with Logan Thompson Focusing on Control, not Numbers Turned Career Around. He also pointed to daily preparation as central to his development: "Coming to the rink, putting in three hours of work every day isn't that hard and just dedicating myself every day for those three hours of hard work β that's kind of just how I've turned my game around" Pro Tips with Logan Thompson Focusing on Control, not Numbers Turned Career Around.
Reflecting on his junior years, Thompson has been candid about how an obsession with being drafted worked against him. "When I started my junior career, I was 15, 16, and I think that my mindset β I was so focused on trying to get drafted and worrying about numbers. And I think that's also what a lot of people focus on: I gotta get drafted, I gotta have good numbers. And then that's when mistakes happen," he told InGoal Pro Tips with Logan Thompson Focusing on Control, not Numbers Turned Career Around. Looking back, he wished he had simply played: "If I could tell 16-year-old me, just shut up and play and enjoy Brandon, Manitoba and just have fun and make some memories because that's what I should have done" Pro Tips with Logan Thompson Focusing on Control, not Numbers Turned Career Around.
Between the Vegas Golden Knights and Washington Capitals, Thompson has compiled a career record of 118-59-23 in 204 games with a 2.57 goals-against average, .912 save percentage, and 10 shutouts. The 2024-25 season included a 31-6-6 run. He is currently in his first season of a six-year, $35.1 million contract with Washington Pro Tips with Logan Thompson Focusing on Control, not Numbers Turned Career Around.
In the 2025-26 season, Thompson has appeared in 58 games for the Capitals, going 31-21-6 with a 2.44 goals-against average, .912 save percentage, and 4 shutouts. At the midway point of that season, Clear Sight Analytics placed Thompson second in the NHL in Goals Saved Above Expected at 15.93, behind only Ilya Sorokin's 20.17 β a total that had already surpassed the full-season mark that earned Connor Hellebuyck a second-straight Vezina and the Hart Trophy Myth-Busters 2025-26 Mid-Season Awards with Clear Sight Analytics.
