Logan Thompson spent four seasons with the WHL's Brandon Wheat Kings without hearing his name called at the NHL Draft. Rather than moving directly into professional hockey, he signed a professional tryout contract with Washington — a team that, at the time, had six goalies on its depth chart — recognized the opportunity was not what he needed, and looked elsewhere. What followed was an unconventional path through U Sports, the ECHL, and the AHL that eventually landed him at the center of the Washington Capitals' goaltending situation and, as of the 2025-26 season, in conversation for major individual awards.
The detour through Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario turned out to be a turning point. Thompson has described the experience in his own words as falling back in love with the game after years of pressure around the draft. "When I started my junior career, I was 15, 16 and I think that my mindset…I was so focused on trying to get drafted and worrying about numbers," he said on Episode 115 of the InGoal Radio Podcast [1]. "And then that's when mistakes happen." Head coach Marty Williamson offered him games and, critically, an understanding that the professional opportunity he wanted was still out there. Thompson went 18-6-0 with a .934 save percentage in his one season at Brock, winning both rookie of the year and goalie of the year honors [2].
The ECHL came calling after just that one university season. With the South Carolina Stingrays — the Washington Capitals' ECHL affiliate — Thompson posted a 23-8-1 record and a .929 save percentage [2]. It was there that he built a relationship with goaltending coach Scott Murray, who later became the Capitals' goaltending coach. In 2020-21, the Vegas Golden Knights signed Thompson to an entry-level deal, and he went on to post a 16-6-1 record with a 1.96 goals-against average and .943 save percentage in his AHL debut season [2]. His first NHL appearance came in relief of Marc-André Fleury.
Thompson has spoken at length about the role that controlling his focus played in his development. Time spent around goalies including ECHL veteran Parker Milner, Golden Knights prospect Oscar Dansk, Robin Lehner, and Marc-André Fleury shaped how he approached the position. "In Vegas, you had Flower and Lehner. You can learn from watching Flower to be athletic, but then Lehner also plays the percentage game really well, and that's kind of something that I wanted to get more in my game," Thompson said [2]. He also credited a shift in his daily preparation habits: "Coming to the rink, putting in three hours of work every day isn't that hard and just dedicating myself every day for those three hours of hard work. And I think that's kind of just how I've turned my game around" [2].
The Washington Capitals eventually became the destination his earlier professional tryout with the organization had not been. After going 31-6-6 in one stretch with Washington, Thompson signed a six-year, $35.1 million contract with the Capitals [2]. He enters the 2025-26 season at age 28, wearing No. 48, standing 6'4" and catching right. Through 58 games this season, he carries a 31-21-6 record, a 2.44 goals-against average, a .912 save percentage, and four shutouts, with career totals of 204 games played, 118 wins, and a career .912 save percentage across 11,903:01 minutes of ice time.
The advanced metrics surrounding his 2025-26 season have drawn significant attention. At the midseason point, Clear Sight Analytics had Thompson second in the NHL in Goals Saved Above Expected at 15.93, behind only Ilya Sorokin's 20.17 [3]. His performance has placed him among the frontrunners to represent Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy [2]. Earlier in the season, InGoal Radio discussed how his expected save percentage sat in the low .880s while he was outperforming it at a pace that drew comparisons to Igor Shesterkin's Hart Trophy-contending season with the Rangers [4].
Colin Hodd's 2025 profile for InGoal connected Thompson's current results back to the philosophy he articulated years earlier on the podcast: "I'm just going to try to focus on what I can do and not worry about the numbers, not worry about a contract next year or two years. Just play hockey and hopefully good things happen" [2]. InGoal Magazine has covered Logan Thompson in two podcast appearances and two InGoal articles.
