Mike Vernon was born on February 24, 1963, in Calgary, Alberta — the same city where he would win his first Stanley Cup. Selected by the Calgary Flames in the third round, 14th pick, of the 1981 NHL Draft, Vernon went on to play 782 games over his NHL career, recording 385 wins, 274 losses, 27 shutouts, and a career goals-against average of 2.98.
Vernon's career carried him through stops with the Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, Florida Panthers, and Calgary again in a second stint. He was part of the Flames' 1989 Stanley Cup championship and later won a second Cup with the Detroit Red Wings in 1997, a season in which he was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
