Selected by the New York Islanders in the third round of the 1979 NHL Draft — 18th pick of the round — the left-catching goaltender went on to play 291 games in the NHL, recording 129 wins, 106 losses, a 3.64 goals-against average, a .883 save percentage, and 6 shutouts. His NHL career included stops with the New York Islanders, Minnesota North Stars, Los Angeles Kings, New Jersey Devils, and Montreal Canadiens. After his playing career concluded, Melanson moved into goaltending coaching.
