Born in Havlickuv Brod, Czech Republic, on January 9, 1996, Vitek Vanecek was selected by the Washington Capitals in the second round, ninth pick, of the 2014 NHL Draft. He would spend years developing in the Capitals organization before earning a sustained presence at the NHL level — and when that moment arrived, he made the most of it.
Vanecek's first full NHL season came in 2020-21, when he appeared in 37 games for Washington, posting a record of 21-10 with a 2.69 goals-against average, a .908 save percentage, and 2 shutouts. He returned to the Capitals the following season, appearing in 42 games and finishing 20-12 with a 2.67 GAA, a .908 save percentage, and a career-high 4 shutouts in a single season.
His path changed ahead of the 2022-23 season, when he joined the New Jersey Devils. That year proved to be the high-water mark of his career to date by several measures: in 52 games — the most he has played in a single NHL season — Vanecek went 33-11 with a 2.45 GAA, a .911 save percentage, and 3 shutouts. The Devils made the playoffs that spring, adding to Vanecek's postseason experience. He returned to New Jersey for 2023-24, going 17-9 in 32 games with a 3.18 GAA and a .890 save percentage.
The 2024-25 season brought another change of address, as Vanecek joined the Florida Panthers. He appeared in 7 games (2-4, 3.00 GAA, .890 save percentage, 1 shutout), serving primarily as the backup to Sergei Bobrovsky. The Panthers won the Stanley Cup that season, making Vanecek a champion. He described what he witnessed from Bobrovsky up close in an April 2026 InGoal article on goaltending and the playoffs [1]: "He never changed. You have to be the same guy."
Prior to that, Vanecek had appeared in 10 playoff games total with the Washington Capitals and New Jersey Devils, giving him a firsthand perspective on what separates the postseason from the regular season. In that same piece, he spoke about the distinct demands goalies face once the playoffs begin. "For sure, the playoffs are harder for goalies," he said. "There's a lot of screen shots. You have to battle really hard in the playoffs to find the puck. It's not same as in the season. In the playoffs, it's very different. For sure, it's faster, but when the goalie is more calm, like he is in the season, it's better." [1]
Vanecek entered the 2025-26 season with the Utah Mammoth, wearing number 41. Through 22 games, he holds a 5-13-3 record with a 2.93 GAA, a .883 save percentage, and 1 shutout. Over 210 NHL regular-season games in his career, he has compiled 101 wins, 69 losses, 24 overtime losses, a 2.84 GAA, a .900 save percentage, and 11 shutouts across 11,740:08 minutes of ice time.
