Last week, we introduced you to a new limited series from former Dallas Stars goaltending coach Mike Valley highlighting 10 lessons from his fascinating career as a professional goalie, goalie coach and self-described serial entrepreneur. The series, which was part of the WHL / Hockey Canada Goaltending Symposium presented by InGoal Magazine, continues this week with Part 2 featuring lessons from give head coaches he’s worked: Barry Trotz when he started in the Nashville organization, to a fiery Marc Crawford, to Willie Desjardins, Glen Gulutzan and recently named New Jersey Devils head coach Lindy Ruff, who was a goalie himself.
Valley shares the ways each influenced his career, including the importance of how you treat other people, creating the right culture, and managing pressure without getting caught up in the roller coaster of winning and losing. And, as he will throughout this series, Valley brings it all back to how these lessons relate to goalie coaches and goalies, including an interesting take on whether the latter really needs the former on a daily basis:
