Goalie Dad answers a parent worried that height will hold their son back
Goalie Dad is back and what a perfect day to join us. After InGoal’s David Hutchison published his first parents’ piece last week the Original Goalie dad makes his return on Father’s Day. The question today is about height but gets to an important larger issue – why do you play goal? It’s fine to have a dream and go for it – but is that your only reason for playing?
Q: I have a question about the height of my son who is a goalie. I hear and see a lot out there about how the small goalie has no place in higher levels of hockey. My wife is 5’3”, and I am just 5’9”. My son is 15 years old and is right around my height. I fear that no matter how good he is, no matter how much training we get for him, he will be passed over for juniors and college and this will all lead to disappointment. My son loves hockey so much and has big dreams, but I am starting to wonder if we need to help him face reality that it might not happen for him.
