When InGoal Magazine started sharing how NHL goalies get ready to practice and play as part of our Pro Tips segments last month, there was at least a little concern they might all end up looking the same. We opened with Carey Price and Montreal Canadiens goaltending coach Stephane Waite and a game day routine that started with static shots, but also included some specific movements – and Price’s unique “kickout drill” – before the final shots.
We’ve since seen several similar routines, but with enough slight variations to keep things interesting and informative, and look forward to sharing new ones each month. Before we get to those, however, we wanted to share from Winnipeg Jets goalie Laurent Brossoit that might have more relevance to most of us who don’t get as much time as NHL goalies to warm up.
Brossoit didn’t face a single shot as he prepared for a morning skate in Vancouver.
“Especially when you’re on the road, you don’t have any time before the skate to get out there early and do the routine I would normally do at home,” Brossoit said. “When I’m on the ice, I have kind of a general outline of movement patterns that I want to get through and feel.”
As Brossoit stressed during his recent interview on the InGoal Radio Podcast, getting ready to play starts with his routine off the ice, one he has developed and refined over the years with his trainer (and fellow feature guest on Episode 108 of the podcast) Adam Francilia.
“Off the ice is the activation and strengthening portion, where you have a chance to, in simplest terms, get certain muscle groups prepared and strong and easily accessible for when you go on the ice and then on the ice you feel out kind of the technical aspects,” Brossoit said.

The first video/movement is what I do before every game too. I feel like that helps to loosen my hips up a bit.
