On the eve of the Montreal Canadiens opening the Stanley Cup Playoffs, we go back to Jake Allen for his third Pro Reads wearing the Bleu, Blanc et Rouge.
Allen’s first Pro Reads with the Canadiens featured great advice on the importance of being comfortable on your posts, and the second installment continued along that theme but with more threat options. This time Allen talks about splitting the ice to create an easy read.
THE SCENARIO

- Jake Allen breaks down his save on Bo Horvat cutting into the high slot off a behind-the-net feed from J.T. Miller during a Montreal Canadiens home game against Vancouver.
- Allen used an early read to split the ice in half, identifying Horvat as the primary threat before the pass was made, which reduced the save to a straightforward reaction.
- Knowing the lines, player tendencies, and shooting hands before a turnover occurs is essential — Allen calls it part of a goalie's nature, and being without that knowledge puts you immediately behind the play.
