LA Kings Director of Goaltending Bill Ranford Q+A
- The Kings' 'left-shoulder dominant' net-play system simplifies puck tracking on behind-the-net plays and reduces hip strain compared to frequent reverse-VH use.
- Ranford explains how smaller or younger goalies can adapt the Kings' back-of-net system when they aren't yet big or strong enough to play from their knees consistently.
- Ranford covers mental game strategies applicable from peewee through professional hockey, offering advice on managing tough in-game situations.
- The Q+A spans Ranford's playing and coaching career, the evolution of the goaltender position, and specific technical tips for developing goalies.
- Four-time Stanley Cup winner Ranford has been a recurring contributor to InGoal Magazine, also appearing on InGoal Radio Episode 233.
Bill Ranford was our special guest when The Hockey Shop hosted TendyFest 6, and the Los Angeles Kings Director of Goaltending and four-time Stanley Cup winner took the time to deliver both on-ice instruction and a lengthy and informative Q+A session.
InGoal Magazine already shared the on-ice segment with our Premium Members last week, which focused on the Kings “left-shoulder dominant” net-play system for goalies, and how it simplified puck tracking on plays behind the net while also reducing some of the wear and tear on the hips associated with increasingly common use of reverse-VH.
This week we continue with Ranford and an extended Q+A session, which naturally started with some follow up questions about the Kings back-of-net system, including how it can be applied with younger, smaller goalies who maybe aren’t big or strong enough to play from the knees as much. But as you’ll see in the video below, Ranford goes well beyond his on-ice lesson, engaging with all the young goalies in the audience and answering questions on everything from his career as a goalie and coach, to the evolution of the position, to technical tips, to how to manage tough mental situations from pee wee to pro:
