Bill Ranford was born on December 14, 1966, in Brandon, Manitoba, and was selected by the Boston Bruins in the third round of the 1985 NHL Entry Draft, 10th pick of that round. The left-catching goaltender went on to play 647 NHL games, recording 240 wins, 15 shutoffs, a 3.41 goals-against average, and a .888 save percentage. He won the Stanley Cup four times during his playing career.
After his playing days, Ranford moved into goaltending development and has spent an extended period with the Los Angeles Kings organization in the role of Director of Goaltending. InGoal Magazine has covered Bill Ranford in one podcast appearance and four InGoal articles.
Ranford appeared as a guest on InGoal Radio Episode 233 in November 2023 [1], and was the featured guest at TendyFest 6, hosted by The Hockey Shop, where he delivered both on-ice instruction and an extended Q&A session with young goalies in attendance [2] [3].
The on-ice instruction Ranford provided at TendyFest 6 centered on the Kings' "left-shoulder dominant" back-of-net system for goaltenders [3]. Ranford set up five pucks below the goal line to demonstrate the system, explaining how it simplifies vision and decision-making on pucks behind the net, reduces the chances of getting caught on same-side pass outs, and carries injury-prevention benefits related to hip health. "I was in LA 17 years, never had a goalie with hip surgery using this system," Ranford said [3]. He described the approach as one that baits shooters into attempting a glove-side wrap while making recovery easier for the goalie, and helps goalies move away from using windows and switching sides in the middle of the net [3].
The Q&A session that followed covered the back-of-net system in further detail, including how it can be adapted for younger or smaller goalies who may not be in a position to play from their knees as much, as well as broader topics ranging from his playing and coaching career to the evolution of the goaltending position and managing difficult mental situations at every level of the game [2].
Ranford also participated in an InGoal InPerson webinar in May 2020 [4] [5].
