Joey Daccord is no stranger to Pro Reads, having done an extended sit-down video session with InGoalduring his time with the Ottawa Senators. Of course, that was way back in 2021, clearly a follow-up with the insightful puck-stopper was long overdue as he heads into his fourth full season as a member of the Seattle Kraken organization.

THE SCENARIO

Naturally, we wanted to start with one of the most memorable highlights from Daccord’s first full season in the NHL, and it came under the bright lights of the Winter Classic:

Joey Daccord in his crease tracking play with early eyes as Seattle Kraken players defend in the neutral zone

As the puck is worked down to the left corner with the Vegas Golden Knights having pulled the goalie for an extra attacker, where are the most dangerous threats?

What do you notice about Daccord and his positioning at this point?

Has anything changed for you as a goalie in this second screencap? Who are the most dangerous threats and what factors about those threats are most important?

If you identified Jack Eichel on the backside as the most dangerous scorer, can you afford to cheat across to him early once this puck is passed? Why or why not?

What do you make of Dacccord still holding his edges at this point?

THE SAVE

Now watch it play out and ask yourself the same questions as it does?

Can you see why Dacccord couldn’t push all the way across the Eichel right away?

Can you identify why it being Eichel gives him more time?

Did you notice the toe-up element of that glove save off Eichel? Other than being a perfect old-school tribute in what was the signature moment of a game designed to take fans back to the pond hockey roots of the game, can you see why the toe up move helped?

Key Takeaways
  • Daccord breaks down his glove save on Jack Eichel during a 6-on-5 Vegas Golden Knights sequence at the Winter Classic.
  • Daccord scanned up ice quickly as the puck entered the corner, looking for mid-zone shooting threats before committing to the down-low play — a deliberate read he explains in his own analysis.
  • Daccord held his edges rather than pushing early to Eichel on the backside, explaining that Eichel's identity as a shooter — not just a receiver — gave him time to wait before committing across.
