Much like his ascension to the starting job with the Washington Capitals, Charlie Lindgren has quickly climbed the ranks of reader favourites with his first three Pro Reads, so we didn’t want to wait too long to get back to him for a third video review session.
THE SEQUENCE
This time Lindgren is facing a New York Rangers 6-on-5 with the goalie pulled for an extra attacker and six high-end players on the ice trying to tie the game.
There are actually several parts to this sequence, and lots for the insightful Lindgren to walk us through, so rather than isolating each one with a freeze frame, let’s go right to the video:
There’s a lot to get into here and a lot of questions and factors to consider before we get to Lindgren’s breakdown. Maybe even watch it again and ask yourself these questions:
- Do you notice anything positionally that you think might be specific to a 6-on-5 late in the game? What would your positional mindset be in this situation?
- When the puck goes behind the net, watch how Lindgren plays his posts, staying mostly neutral rather than committing too hard to his right after the initial shot goes behind the net. How do you think it helps him? Would you do it different?
- When the puck goes to Artemi Panarin, with Alexis Lafrenière out front, do you notice in particular about the way Lindgren manages his post now?
- Can you spot the quick key to Lindgren making that final save? What is it?

- Lindgren breaks down his save against a Rangers 6-on-5 with Panarin and Lafrenière on the ice, explaining how he navigated a multi-phase scramble sequence late in the game.
- Lindgren deliberately avoided being too aggressive, prioritizing structural and positional stability over active puck pursuit to prevent being caught out of position on a high-end play.
- When the puck went behind the net, Lindgren stayed mostly neutral on his posts rather than committing hard to one side, preserving his ability to react to the next threat without additional scrambling.
