Alex Lyon was so insightful on the InGoal Radio Podcast earlier this summer and has been just as thoughtful with the advice offered through his first two Pro Reads (links below), which includes a deep dive on how altering the length of your toe ties can also widen your butterfly. With tips like that, we didn’t want to wait too long to go back to Lyon for a fourth entry from his extended video breakdown session.
THE SEQUENCE
Lyon is facing his previous team, the Florida Panthers, again, this time dealing with a rush that leads to a dump in, and a play out of the corner to his right. Things happen fast from there, so rather than a freeze frame, this week let’s go straight to video:

- Alex Lyon breaks down his save on a scramble behind the net against the Florida Panthers, where a Matthew Tkachuk pass off the back boards redirected out front for a quick shot.
- When a goalie loses sight of the puck in a net-play situation, Lyon's instinct is to execute an 'insurance play': get wide and get square to maximize coverage with no information on puck location.
- Lyon acknowledges the save was largely luck but credits positioning discipline — defaulting to his widest, squarest stance — as the factor that put him in a recoverable spot.
