Spending time with Devon Levi in Kelowna, B.C. last summer allowed InGoal to catch up with the Buffalo Sabres goalie and grab fresh content on and off the ice. It also reminded us how great his insights are, and that they should not be wasted, so we’re going back into our Pro Reads video session together from the previous summer for more great breakdowns.
THE SEQUENCE AND SAVE
In this video review, Levi is facing the New Jersey Devils and a quick 2-on-1 in the slot after a turnover along the right boards to a defenseman at the point. Unfortunately, the replays don’t provide a great opportunity to freeze frame the key decision point for Levi so we’re going to go straight to video. As you watch the replay below, see if you can identify the choice he makes that allows him to make what is still a highlight reel save.
Again, the replay isn’t ideal because Levi is out of the frame as the puck is turned over and passed into the slot to create the scoring chance, but what did you notice about his depth and positioning relative to the player who takes that pass at the left hash mark?
Watch it again.
Does he ever square up to the threat in the left slot?
Can you see why that might be?

- Devon Levi breaks down his save on a quick 2-on-1 against the New Jersey Devils, where a turnover along the right boards led to a dangerous slot chance for Nico Hischier.
- Levi never committed to the passer at the left hash mark because the player's body — 'numbers facing the boards' — confirmed he had no shooting lane, allowing Levi to stay centered and track the real threat.
- Levi credits a lesson from his NHL debut against the Rangers — where he lunged and got burned by a pass — as the reason he learned to read body language before moving, rather than reacting to puck position alone.
