Downhill Power Play Shooters and ‘Human Nature’ Hedges

With Alex Lyon set to return this week from a lower-body injury after an otherwise great start to this season for the Detroit Red Wings, now is a perfect time to go back to the insightful puck stopper for another Pro Reads video breakdown. lex Lyon is off to a great start to this season with a .940 save percentage for the Detroit Red Wings that includes a 30-save 1-0 shutout win, so we’re going back to him earlier that originally scheduled for another Pro Reads video breakdown.

THE SEQUENCE

Scenario freeze frame of the situation for Alex Lyon ProRead 6 Downhill PP Shooters and ‘Human Nature’ Hedges
As Lyon explains below, this is an increasingly common power play scenario, with the puck carrier set up to skate “downhill” towards the net with multiple passing options? Seeing the freeze frame, can you identify all those options?
Do you have a movement plan in place for each one? Based on what factors?
What if it goes to the goal line? What about the player in the bumper?

THE SAVE

Watch the sequence and replays below to see if the option you worried about most was the one that played out? Be sure to note how Lyon moves and handles it.

Did you identify the cross-ice threat that played out? Once that pass is made to the right defenseman, what factors matter the most in terms of how you play him?
What did you make of Lyon’s path across? Don’t be afraid to critique it because Lyon won’t hesitate to do it to himself. Can you see why he came across that way?
Once the puck gets across were you thinking shot or another pass?
Why? Can you see any risk in how Lyon played this in the second replay from above?
