Joey Daccord may be out of the Seattle Kraken lineup to start 2025 because of an injury, but we didn’t want to keep him out of the Pro Reads rotation for too long because he’s been so good in this format, first sharing his play-reading insights while with the Ottawa Senators in 2021 before re-joining us for an in-person video session just before training camp this year.
THE SEQUENCE
After opening with a couple of memorable sequences from Daccord’s Winter Classic MVP performance — and we recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of that memorable game in Kraken history – Daccord’s fourth Pro Reads entry with Seattle is an in-zone sequence against the Toronto Maple Leafs after a chip into the offensive zone:
The puck isn’t in the frame above but we can tell you it’s on its way to a forechecking Maple Leafs forward in the left corner after being chipped across from the other side behind the net. With that in mind, what information are you looking for if you are Daccord here?
Who is the most dangerous player, and what factors about him matter the most?
What do you notice about Daccord as he pushes across from left to right?
What do you make of the decision to come across down into a Reverse?
THE SAVE
Now watch this sequence play out and ask yourself the same questions.
Did you correctly anticipate the most dangerous player? Did it play out as you first anticipated? What did you make of how Daccord handled this by coming across to his feet before dropping and re-adjusting himself before the shot?
THE PRO READ
Now let’s hear from Daccord on how he saw this sequence unfold and he managed it:

- Daccord breaks down his save on an in-zone sequence against the Toronto Maple Leafs, reading a chip pass from behind the net to a forechecking forward in the left corner.
- Daccord explains that scanning mid-push across the crease allowed him to locate the second Maple Leafs forward and identify him as the primary threat before the pass arrived.
- Because his scan confirmed the danger man's position, Daccord chose to stay down in a Reverse rather than regain his feet, trusting his read that the puck was already on its way.
