Devin Cooley was named to his first American Hockey League All-Star Game this week as he continues to impress in his first season with the Calgary Flames.
That follows an equally great impression on the InGoal Radio Podcast last summer, shortly after his first season in the NHL ended with the San Jose Sharks, a long and enjoyable interview that also included a video review session.
Just because Cooley isn’t in San Jose doesn’t mean we want to lose his insights, even as his game continues to evolve in Calgary, so we’re going back to the late-blooming 27-year-old for another segment from our hour-long video session.
THE SEQUENCE
After a lot of clips against the Chicago Blackhawks, this time Cooley is facing the St. Louis Blues and a 2-on-1 rush coming into the San Jose Zone:
What factors are you looking for from both the puck-carrier and the pass option?
Does the handedness of the pass option matter? In what way?
What do you make of Cooley’s depth at this point?
In what way do you think it might be impacted by that handedness?
THE SAVE
Speed matters on a rush chance – and in this case it changes during the 2-on-1 (maybe you already noticed?) — so watch it unfold and ask the same questions.
Watch it again and watch his position and stance even after the puck is off the shooter’s stick – what do you notice and perhaps like about it?
THE PRO READ
Now let’s hear from Cooley on what he saw and how he played this 2-on-1
