Last time we checked in with Charlie Lindgren, the Washington Captials goalie had just made a potential NHL Save of the Season with a “butter-stack” windmill glove stop.

Now, as we go back to Lindgren for another Pro Reads session, he has done it again with an incredible head-first Superman dive glove save to take away an empty net goal after his teammates turned over the puck while he was on his way to the bench for an extra attacker. Not that we need additional reasons to run more Lindgren content: He’s already a favourite in this space for his generous, insightful and open video breakdown sessions.

THE SEQUENCE

After breaking down a lot of rush chances, Lindgren is dealing with a Colorado Avalanche power play against a couple of former Montreal Canadiens teammates this time:

Looking at the freeze frame above, what are the most important pieces of information you need to be aware of as a goalie? What do you notice about Lindgren in this freeze frame?

THE SAVE

Watch the save play out, keeping the same questions in mind:

Did you notice Lindgren look off the puck as it was being passed across to Jonathan Drouin at the left point? What information do you think he was looking for there? What did you like — or perhaps even dislike — about the way he set up before, and then moved into the save?

THE PRO READ

Now we can listen is as Lindgren explains his read and the importance of that scan:

Key Takeaways
  • Lindgren breaks down his glove save against a Colorado Avalanche power play, facing former Montreal Canadiens teammates Jonathan Drouin and others at the left point.
  • Lindgren explains that scanning off the puck during a pass is a habit goalies can and should develop as young as the Squirt or Pee Wee level, where more time and space make it even easier to execute.
  • Lindgren credits his stance for enabling both the off-puck look and the explosive push into the save — describing how his body position set up the entire sequence.
