As Joey Daccord continues to build on last season’s breakout with Seattle Kraken, we didn’t want to wait any longer to get him back in the Pro Reads because he’s been so good in this format, first sharing his play-reading insights while with the Ottawa Senators in 2021 before re-joining us for an in-person video session just before training camp this year.

THE SEQUENCE AND SAVE

After opening with a couple of memorable sequences from Daccord’s Winter Classic MVP performance (links to those below), Daccord’s is breaking down a second straight in-zone sequence, this time against the Detroit Red Wings after a pass down behind his net.

There are multiple elements involved in this sequence that Daccord shares advice on, so rather than focusing on one part with a freeze frame, let’s go right to the save video.

As you watch it below, look for any unique elements that stand out to you as that puck moves back and forth below the goal line. Make a quick list of at least 2 things that you like about the way that Daccord manages this play. Are there any you don’t like? How early can you identify the most dangerous player on the ice in this sequence?

Did you correctly identify the most dangerous player? Maybe just as important, did you see why Daccord was able to identify him? Did you notice how many times — and when –Daccord looked off the puck to scan the zone and look for pass options?

What about the way he came across to his right post while still looking over his left shoulder? And lastly, what did you make of Daccord’s extended stick as he comes back to his left? He may not cut off the pass, but can you see the key to not getting caught?
