Dustin Wolf is coming off an impressive first full season in the NHL, earning a finalist nod for Rookie of the Year, and keeping a Calgary Flames team that was supposed to be rebuilding in the playoff race until the final days of the regular season.
Shortly before being rewarded with a seven-year, $52.5 million contract extension, Wolf was kind enough to sit down with InGoal Magazine as he prepares for his second full NHL season, spending close to an hour breaking down film for his second Pro Reads session. We’re excited to share more of his insightful analysis.
THE SEQUENCE
Wolf is facing the Anaheim Ducks power play and a pass right across the ice:
As that pass arrives cleanly from the right boards onto the stick of Ducks forward Brett Leason cutting towards the net, what information are you looking for?
Is Leason your main priority? Is there anything else to worry about?
As you cut across, what are your positional priorities? Are you just trying to get out and take some ice to cut down how much net Leason can see? Why or why not?
THE SAVE
Watch the save and replays below to see if Wolf prioritizes the same things.
What did you like about the way Wolf came across?
Is there anything you didn’t like or might have done differently?
It’s okay to point it out, as you will see in these sessions, Wolf will often be the first one to point out other ways to play it or things he wishes he did different.
If he didn’t play it the same way you would have, ask yourself why?

- Dustin Wolf breaks down his save on an Anaheim Ducks power play cross-ice pass to Brett Leason cutting toward the net.
- Wolf tracks Leo Carlsson parked at the edge of the crease simultaneously with the puck carrier, treating the backdoor threat as equally important as the shooter.
- Wolf identifies reading multiple threats on a power play cross-ice pass as a deliberate, pre-loaded awareness — not a reactive adjustment.
