Welcome to part 5 of our OHL video series with Rick Wamsley, who spent 13 seasons in the NHL as a goalie and another 15 as an NHL goalie coach.
In this new series, Wamsley takes us inside his process for reading the game and making decisions under pressure. Each episode is based off the daily video work Wamsley does at GoalieU, breaking down a real game clip to help you see what the goalie sees – and understand the “why” behind each choice they make. The series will run weekly as he works through the 10 most common ways goals are scored, before shifting to a monthly format.
THIS WEEK: Managing a cross-ice carry, or “net drive,” in the high slot
Today’s breakdown features former Brampton Steelheads goalie Jack Ivankovic, who was picked by the Predators in the second round of the 2025 NHL Draft this summer, managing a high slot lateral drive against the Oshawa Generals last season. It might not feel like a “net drive” that high in the zone, but it’s the phrase used to describe any carry across the middle of the ice, or what Steve Valiquette calls the “slot line” or “Royal Road.”
