"Vizual Edge has added a quality element to my preparation as a goaltender. I use the game day drills every game before heading to the rink. It’s a combination of recognition, reaction and focus that activates my brain and eyes to feel ready for what’s to come.” — Jordan Binnington

It’s been a while since we sat down for this extended Pro Reads video session with Devin Cooley. He’s since switched teams from San Jose to Calgary, became an AHL All Star, and is poised to start this season as the Flames backup to Dustin Wolf.
Regardless of how long it’s been since we recorded this, we didn’t want to lose any of the insights from the late-blooming 28-year-old so before the new season starts, we’re going back into our hour-long video session for the last Pro Reads. We are confident it won’t be long until we have a LOT more NHL clips to break down with Cooley, but we didn’t want to lose any of the wisdom he shared in there.

THE SEQUENCE

Cooley is again facing the Seattle Kraken (and former playing junior partner and mentor Joey Daccord) in this clip, which features a pass into the high slot:

Devin Cooley Pro Reads 11 Screencap 1
Looking at the freeze frame above, what do you make of Cooley’s depth choice?
Think back to last week’s breakdown with Eric Comrie about a similar shooting chance from the middle of the ice – what factors allowed him to take more ice?
Are there other threats, or are you locking in on the shooter at this point?

THE SAVE

Not to give too much away, but the bulk of this breakdown focuses on the rebound chance that follows, so watch the save video below and try to identify keys:

First off, what did you think of the fact there was a rebound? If you’re being critical, know that the puck changed direction off the shot blocking defenders in front.
Any more thoughts on Cooley’s depth? What about there he ends up making that rebound save off Jaden Schwartz cutting across in front of the net?

THE PRO READ

Now let’s hear from Cooley on how he saw it, and why he played it this way:
