Eric Comrie made his return to Pro Reads this summer after almost four years and the Winnipeg Jets goalie was so good that we didnβt want to wait more than a month to get back to him. So, without further delay letβs go back to Comrie, who openly shares how he β and goalie coach Wade Flaherty and teammate Connor Hellebuyck β look at the game, both in real time and in video breakdown sessions like these.
THE SCENARIO
Comrie is facing a 3-on-2 against the Calgary Flames in this one, with Nazem Kadri leading the rush up ice, and a perfect replay angle for us to consider:
Looking at that freeze frame above in much the same way Comrie would be seeing it, what are the most important factors to consider in terms of both Kadri and the passing options on each side? What about the Jets defensemen?
Comrie isnβt in the picture yet, but what would you expect in terms of his depth and positioning relative to the top edge of the crease? What factors determine this?
THE SAVE
Of course, speed is one key factor on any rush chance, so take a look at the full video of this sequence below and that great replay from behind Comrieβs net, and ask yourself the same questions about passing options, defenders and depth:
Beyond the attacking players, was there anything about the way the defensemen managed this situation that stood out to you? Anything about it that you think might have affected the way Comrie played this? What did you make of his depth?
And, lastly, given what Comrie told us in recent Pro Reads, what do you think he, Flaherty and Hellebuyck might be keying on if they re-watched this together?
THE PRO READ
Now letβs hear from Comrie and get his thoughts on how he played this:
Still ahead in this article:
Comrie walks through his exact checklist for reading odd-man rushes β the first item on it is simpler than most goalies expect, and it starts before the puck even crosses the blue line.
